One of the main questions I asked the bride and groom during our first consultation is if they have a choreographed first dance. The first dance is one of the most important moments of the wedding day and God forbid we miss the big dip, the jump or the twirl.
Generally, I asked the couples to rehearse their first dance in front of me so that I know where to be positioned when the most important moments take place. However, in this case we didn't have time to do that on the big day so I had to play by ear.
In this wedding photo of the first dance we can see the bride and groom side-by-side dancing while in the audience is looking at them. Because this wedding venue has state-of-the-art audio and video and entertainment systems, I had all the conditions to create a stunning photograph. The DJ used a dry ice machine to create a thick layer of fog on the grand, so the couple seems to be dancing on a cloud.
In order to give the image a sense of motion, I had two options. First I could have shot the picture at the low shutter speed. However, that would have been risky as many of my pictures would have been blurred. The better alternative was to photograph the scene using the Dutch tilt technique. The slight slope gives of your the impression that the bride and groom are dancing at night breaking speed.
To capture this moment, I used a Canon 35mm 1.4 lens mounted on a Canon 5D Mark three.
