Groomsmen Playing Cards at a King Edward Hotel Wedding

Early in my career as a professional photographer I learned that the experience we provide to our couples is almost as important as the images with deliver. At the end of the day, not everybody's an expert in photography but everybody can remember if they have fun or not on the wedding day. What can be more fun for the boys then being photographed while having a game of poker before the wedding ceremony? That is particularly important for this groom and the boys who absolutely love the game.

To give the portrait a bit of dynamism, I asked the wedding party to throw the cards at me when it prompted them.

Lighting of this wedding Portrait

To capture such a beautiful shot I had to rely on good lighting. Here you can see the guys throwing the cards towards the camera. The cards are frozen in the air and it is apparent that the guys are having a good time.

To light the scene I used a cross lighting scheme in which I placed two flashes one to the left and one to the right of the camera. The cross lighting shakes the groomsmen faces and gives the image a three-dimensional feel.

Besides the lighting and the creativity of the concept, what makes this picture stand out is the expression of the boys. The are clearly enjoying the moment and as a side note were absolutely delighted see this shot.
