Groom Enjoying a Drink at King Edward Hotel Wedding

For the bride and groom, the wedding day is an emotional event and as a professional photographer have a few tricks I use to help my couples relax.

During my consultations I highly recommend that my couples avoid alcohol the evening before the big day. Over time, I noticed that the couple's to forgo alcohol have a better sleep and are fresh in the morning when we start. However during the bride and groom's preparation I highly encourage them to have a drink or two so that they feel relaxed and very natural in front of my camera.

Also, I like taking a manly photograph of the groom having a drink before he's wedding ceremony. As such, on the special day I asked the groom to join me in the library and have a drink or two before we headed to Crystal Ballroom for the ceremony.

The beauty of portraits where the groom holds a glass is that they don't look awkward. If the groom holds something in his hand he will be more relaxed and look very natural in the frame. As such, I found a chair in the beautiful library and asked him to finish his drink while I was changing my lenses. That is one of my tricks that allows me to take a few candid moments without my subjects knowing that they are actually photographed. To like to this portrait I used a continuous source of lighting placed camera left slightly above the groom's head.
