Bridal Portrait at Toronto Botanical Garden Wedding

At this Toronto Botanical Garden wedding, makeup and hair ran late. As such, I did not have a lot of time to take bridal portraits. Generally, I require two hours with the bride after her hair and makeup are finalized. Here, we had five minutes. Still, I'm very pleased with the results.

In this image, I use the technique I call dropping the veil, to create a soft photo of the bride. This is how it works: a pre-focus on the bride then ask my assistant or one of the bridesmaids to lift the veil and to drop it. Shooting through the veil is a hit or miss exercise, but often it generates fantastic results. This is one of them. The veil placed between the camera and the bride softens the skin and gives an ethereal look to the wedding portrait. In fact, before Photoshop, shooting through the veil was used by Toronto wedding photographers as a technique to soften the brides skin.
