I often see wedding photographers in Toronto who try very hard to make posed pictures look natural. They achieve that in various degrees of success. Some of the photos look really good while others look awkward and contrived.
It is a great pleasure when on the special day, the couple opens up and gives the photographer plenty of moments of love, one of the main gradients of a good documentary photograph.
During the wedding reception, the bride and groom went out to take a break and spend some time alone. As usual, I follow them discreetly and waited. While the bride and groom were chatting, I set up my exposure and put my camera in silent mode. To create this picture I used a Canon 85 mm lens and a 5D Mark III camera. This medium telephoto lens allowed me to observe the bride and groom without interfering or annoying them.
After only a few minutes, the groom lean towards the bride, lifted her in the air and kissed her passionately. This image captures that moment and shows a happy bride resting her head on the groom's shoulder while he carries her back onto the dance floor.
To illuminate the scene I have to use a flash because the courtyard was fairly dark towards the end of the big day.
Post processing this image was simple. I just colour corrected it, perform some basic skin retouching and and a vignette.
