To say that I liked the atmosphere at this Barcelo Maya Palace wedding would be an understatement. Given that I spent a few days with the bridal party and the bride and groom's families, I get a chance to know them well before the wedding. As a result, on the wedding day they opened up and allowed me to photograph them worrying too much about the camera. This image was taken during that wedding reception, immediately after the speeches and the cake cutting when everybody started dancing. As a Toronto wedding photographer I documented many events in my life but I have yet to see such an energetic crowd. That, presented the opportunity of taking outstanding candid photos on the dance floor.
In this image, we can see all the guests dancing and wearing glow sticks, which adds colour to this gorgeous image. The genuine emotions also add value to this photograph. Some guests are wearing their glow sticks around their ears some of them around their necks while others are holding them in their hands.
In order to capture this image, I used a 35mm lens on a Canon 5D Mark III camera. In terms of lighting, this is a mixed lighting situation. My flash, position camera left, is providing the main light. The dance floor is also illuminated by a blue up light. In the background, the palm trees are lit in intense blue to create the perfect backdrop for this wedding photo. The predominant colour in this image is blue, which was also one of the colours the bride choose for her wedding theme. It complements perfectly the orange skin tones and the tungsten light emitted by my flash to complete the classic orange and blue colour palette.
